Remember Lather, Rinse, Repeat?
Recent neuroscience research suggests we can revitalize our brains as we do our skin and hair. It's kind of like lather, rinse, repeat, with an emphasis on the repeat. Scientists have shown that with only a few minutes a day of the right kind of repetitious behavior, we can improve our resilience, well-being, and overall vitality. This takes mindfully and regularly directing our attention on positive thoughts, and then savoring them until they soak into our long-term memories. Story initiates the process, assisted by a guided visualization. Neuroscience studies also tell us that when reading a story, different brain regions collaborate to create an experience that is much like imagining a real life, vivid event. We more easily absorb a story's message than we do information. In other words, it's kind of like savor, soak, repeat. Where better to savor and soak than the tub? In the tub, we have a moment alone. A daily routine. In the tub we can savor and soak with a bar of soap in our hands, a guided visualization in our ears, and an inspiring story in our hearts. In the bath we have a chance to cleanse our minds while cleansing our bodies. Here we may move from a negative to a positive state; a state of worry to a state of wonder. There is no top-secret formula, no overly complicated process, just a fun and innovative approach we lightheartedly call Bathology. |
